Tree Stump Removal & Why It’s Better Than Just Leaving A Stump
When you’ve had a tree removed – what’s left is often an eyesore. A stump strewn with roots that could sprout again, attract bugs, or ruin your lawn mower.
Stump and root grinding is our solution. We use powerful tools to chip away the trunk and roots below ground – leaving a clean surface that can be replanted. It’s eco‑friendly and quickly restores your garden. No chemicals, no wait, and no roots poking up later.

Stump Grinding Service Dunedin – How It Works
1. Site Visit & Assessment
Site Visit & Assessment We’ll assess the stump’s location – whether on a steep slope or flat lawn, safety’s always our first priority! We’ll check for water pipes and power lines, access and environmental impact. We’ll give you a quote and walk you through the plan – no rush, and no jargon!
2. Grinding Out the Stump
We bring in our trusty stump-grinder. Small enough to fit in tight spaces (even South Dunedin driveways), but strong enough to chew through hardwood. We typically grind down 150mm below ground, ensuring the stump can’t resprout. The result? A flat, root-free hole ready for new planting or lawn.
3. Mulch & Clean-Up
The leftover wood chips are prime mulch. Want them? We bag them for your veggie patch or rose garden. Don’t want them? We haul them away. We sweep, rake, and leave your place so tidy you’ll forget there was ever a stump – except in that lovely, levelled spot where you can now grow something new.

Why It Matters More Than You Think
Leaving a stump isn’t just ugly. Here’s is why tree root grinding really matters – and why it pays to have them properly removed.
- No surprise regrowth: Stumps can send up sprouts for years – especially if the roots are deep.
- Stops pests in their tracks: Rotting wood attracts fungi, termites, and other critters that might eventually wander into your home (those old gardeners near the Octagon have seen this!).
- Boosts safety: Tripping hazards, mower snafus… we’ve seen it all. Grind it smooth, keep it safe.
- Land ready for action: Want to build, or plant/ You need a stump-free foundation.

Questions For Our Crew
How deep into the ground do you go?
We typically grind around 150 mm (6″) below ground level. That reduces the risk of it resprouting and you’ve got room to resod or replant.
Can you take out stumps near property lines or under decks?
Absolutely. Our arborists are seasoned at tight‑spot work – whether it’s pruning near powerlines or grinding beneath decks. Safety first, every time.
What happens to the mulch?
We turn wood chips into mulch rich in nutrients and leave them on‑site for your garden, or haul them away if you’d rather not deal with it. Mulch makes excellent compost or top-dressing for flowerbeds.
How long does it take?
A small-to-medium stump can be done in around an hour, including cleanup. Large stumps might take longer. We always give a clear time estimate during the site visit.
Will there be any damage to nearby turf or plants?
Nope. We use spot‑precise machinery and protective mats. We’re very careful!
Can you do multiple stumps in one visit?
For sure. We can take out as many as you like. We’ll bundle the cost with clear pricing up front.
. Do I need council consent?
Not for stump grinding alone, no. If it’s part of a larger project we’ll advise you.
When’s the best season to grind stumps?
Anytime! But spring and summer are ideal – you’ll be ready to grow new lawn or garden by autumn. We work year‑round.
